Therefore schools and adults have an important role to play in education about emotional, social & mental wellbeing. Promoting positive lifestyles, healthy eating, exercise and sleep habits.
Introduction to Youth Mental Health First Aid Courses Around 1 in 7 Hong Kong adults experience a common mental illness each year. Up to 1.7 million Hong Kong people have a diagnosed mental health problem. Research in 2017 highlighted that 53% of Hong Kong Secondary School students have displayed symptoms of depression.
Understanding how to talk about mental health and help someone in need are important skills. Many people feel uncomfortable and unprepared when thinking about starting a conversation with someone they are concerned about. Having mental health first aid skills means that you can assist someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis and make a real difference to your community.
Evidence-based Courses Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) courses are based on evidence of what is best practice mental health first aid to support someone who has a mental health problem or is experiencing a mental health crisis. YMHFA courses are evaluated, using rigorous scientific methods, to ensure they are having a positive impact. These evaluations consistently show that YMHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their treatments, knowledge of appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness, benefits which are maintained over time. Some studies have also shown improved mental health in those who attend the training, decreases in stigmatising attitudes and increases in the amount and type of support provided to others.
Training Outcomes
KNOWLEDGE Increases mental health literacy
CONFIDENCE Increases confidence in providing mental health first aid
DE-STIGMATISING Decreases stigmatising attitudes
SUPPORT Increases the support provided to others
What is covered in an YMHFA course? Learn to recognise common mental health problems, how to provide initial help to someone experiencing a mental health problem using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan, and how to respond in a crisis situation. During the course, participants have the opportunity to practice new skills in a safe environment.

Why work-life balance?
“The World Health Organisation defines ‘health’ as a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing. By focusing too much on one area means we are out of balance with the rest, which can eventually become detrimental. ” – City Mental Health Alliance, Hong Kong
Hong Kong has one of the longest working weeks in the world. The International Labour Organization (ILO) recommends a 40-hour working week but, according to its statistics, more than a third of employees in Hong Kong worked above 48 hours per week in 2018 (the threshold that the ILO considers “excessive”), and almost one in ten worked more than 60 hours per week. With more of us working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the lines between our work and personal lives have become blurred, and it’s become more difficult than ever to “switch off” — literally and figuratively — at the end of the day. In a 2020 survey, 55% of Hong Kong respondents said that working from home had actually made their work day longer, and 72% reported feeling like they were “always on”. Why did we develop this?
We recognise that mental health and physical health are closely tied together, and someone’s overall wellbeing is strongly impacted by their mental health. However, mental health is an unspoken part of the role of many fitness coaches, trainers and instructors. We know the fitness and sports sector work closely with people who are experiencing mental health problems, even if this is not immediately obvious. People working in fitness and exercise settings sit in a unique position, in that they are privy to a lot of information about an individual’s wellbeing and may suspect that someone needs help for their mental health. However, they may not feel that they have the knowledge or expertise to be able to direct people to appropriate support.
Who is this for?
The workshop is tailored for coaches, personal trainers and fitness instructors. We want to empower people working in fitness and exercise settings to recognise when someone might be suffering from a mental health problem and offer appropriate support. This training seeks to provide vital information and skills to help people who are experiencing changes in their mental health to reach the help that they need.
What will be covered?
- Brief introduction to mental health
- Explore the links between physical and mental health
- Review the most common mental health problems
- Go through early warning signs and how to know if someone needs help
- What types of help are available for mental health problems in Hong Kong
- Practice having a conversation to support someone’s mental health
- How exercise impacts mental health
Thank you to Here to Be, lululemon’s social impact program, for supporting this training.
