Mind HK’s “More Than a Label: This is our story” Exhibition in Sheung Wan

Get inspired with 30 local personal stories of mental health journeys on World Mental Health Day

(21st September 2021 – Hong Kong) – As part of their ongoing mission to improve awareness and understanding of mental health in Hong Kong, Mind HK, a registered S88 charity (91/16471), has recently conducted a survey of 1,010 adults about the general public’s attitude toward mental health and the stigma surrounding these issues across the city. The results reveal that 46% of the respondents believe that the leading cause of mental illness is a lack of self-discipline and willpower; 23% and 33% of respondents said they would not be willing to work or live nearby with someone with mental health problems, respectively. These figures show that the levels of stigma around mental health remain significantly high in Hong Kong.

Mind HK partners with Jardine Matheson Group’s charity – MINDSET Hong Kong (MINDSET), to launch “More Than a Label”, an evidence-based anti-stigma campaign, with a public exhibition and book launch of “More Than a Label: This is our story” involving Mind HK’s ambassador’s stories and their recovery journeys. In the hope to improve mental health literacy from different perspectives, ultimately lower the levels of stigma and develop a far more tolerant attitude towards mental health within the society.

Join Mind HK from 15th to 19th October at The Wild Lot, Sheung Wan for the organisation’s inaugural exhibition titled “More Than a Label: This is our story”, launching in honour of World Mental Health Day. 1 in 7 Hong Kong people are experiencing a mental health condition at any given time in the city; the exhibition will feature over 30 personal stories of mental health recovery journeys and highlight how anyone, and everyone diagnosed with a mental health condition is #MoreThanALabel and are people just like us. The book “More Than a Label: This is our story” published by Mind HK that includes 41 local mental health stories will also be launched at the exhibition.

Join us at the exhibition and follow @morethanalabelhk on Instagram for updates.

About MINDSET

MINDSET is a registered charity in Hong Kong founded by the Jardine Matheson Group in 2002, focused on making a positive and sustainable difference in mental health — a vitally important yet under-resourced area of global concern.

With operation in Hong Kong and Singapore, we collaborate with a number of mental health organisations and NGOs, advocacy groups and corporate partners, with an aim to raise awareness and change the perception and attitude around mental health. Our mission is to challenge stigma through the education and empowerment of individuals to enable them to share with, and support, one another. We also provide direct assistance to people with mental ill-health. Visit their Facebook page @MINDSETHongKong and website at mindset.org.hk to learn more about MINDSET.
