Erica’s Poem – Lessons from Improv
In improv we learn
There is a cave
Which is home to a treasure chest
And the audience just wants you to get to the treasure
But instead
We create problems for ourselves
We spin hypotheticals out of thin air
We create landslides, portals, and crime scenes
Just to distract ourselves
From what is really in front of us
Because we’re scared
That if we face the cave
And open the treasure chest:
The emotions get messy
The adventure is over
The job is done
The mission is accomplished
And we won’t know what happens next
In improv we learn
The treasure is not the end
But the beginning
So, enter the cave
Even if it’s dark, musty, and a little scary
And find your treasure
Even if you don’t know what’s next
And trust that the outcome will be
More beautiful than what you could have imagined
